Job Information
The applications team is responsible for the programming, customisation, tuning and integration of software systems

The applications developer is accountable for the development maintenance, configuration, and enhancement of a variety of applications utilising  C#.NET and/or  VB .NET on Microsoft SQL Server databases. The application developer is also responsible for the deployment of third party software releases and in-house developments through the testing cycle and into production. This position consists of two main roles; Application Developer and Application Designer,

Application Developers are responsible for

  • producing high quality deliverables for programming, customizations, tuning and integration of software systems with reliability and dependability
  • providing reusable components and future enhancements for code, customizations or configuration or packages, applications or servers
  • fixing bugs for software solutions without introducing new bugs or violating standards or consistency of the systems
  • testing systems and equipment for substandard performance or malfunctioning  and testing systems for Dependability, safety, security and performance before deployment and make sure they conform to their requirements and specifications
  • identifying the root causes of software solutions problems and provide recommended and standard solutions
  • writing help files, software and systems documentation, technical guides and installation steps including documentation on how to use the produced applications, libraries, classes and any reusable code as well as writing comments for code snippets and files

Application Designers are responsible for

  • preparing technical plans for long term development tasks, coding standards, integration requirements and features, dependencies, and documentation
  • monitoring conformance to design standards and decisions during the implementation
  • performing investigation and research for alternative solutions and technologies
  • resolving design issues and problems, identifying problems, enhancement opportunities and unimplemented business requirements
  • resolving challenges regarding the implementation or the application of business rules in technical tools and applications
  • performing assignments and tasks that require deep and thorough understanding of this field of specialty

  • Business Applications / Automation – Archiving solutions and techniques, Automation tools, Business concepts (accounting, HR, inventory ,etc…), Business process management, Document management, E-business, Enterprise application integration, Enterprise resource planning-ERP and CRM, Internet technologies, Records management, Workflow management
  • Database content – Database management systems (Oracle, DB_, MSSQL, etc..), Database administration, Database development, Content management and enterprise portals, Database modelling and design, Database technologies, Backup and restore techniques, Database reporting, Data migration, data warehousing and data mining, Data standards (XML, metadata, representation, confidentiality, etc..), Database performance enhancement and tuning, Database scalability, sizing and capacity

Key areas of responsibility
  1. System / solution specification
    1. The Application Developer will contribute to the creation of the Functional Specifiction and all the required documentation to derive a solution and contribute in project review meetings by interpreting the BRD document into potential system functionality and rules.and then assisting to document the recommended solution into a Functional Requirements Specification (FRS)
    2. Development
      1. Modify existing software to correct errors, to adapt it to new hardware or to upgrade interfaces and improve performance.
      2. Analyze information to determine, recommend and plan installation of a new system or modification of an existing system.
      3. Consult with customers and/or other departments on project status, proposals and technical issues such as software system design and maintenance.
      4. Store, retrieve, and manipulate data for analysis of system capabilities and requirements.
      5. Testing
        1. Assist in creating create test plans, test data and test packs for each system / project.
        2. Perform Unit Testing and Systems Integration Testing within the provided or recommended test infrastructure & policies.  Make recommendations for training and development of systems/user manuals and e-learning modules.
        3. Change Management
          1. Review the development of specified new functionality whether provided through internal developers or external vendors to ensure best practices are followed
          2. Follow all change control processes to implement the agreed solution by ensuring that  all changes in the System upgrades, systems configuration changes or application parameter changes (e.g “Fee Adjustments”) have been approved by the Change Approval Board (CAB) and have been tested.
          3. Implement the any security changes and assist with the audit thereof by the Governance and Change Manager.
          4. Support
            1. Provide 2nd and 3rd level support in order to resolve incidents within SLA timescales, conduct root cause analysis in order to resolve problems, updating all relevant process documentation.
            2. Log and follow-up issues
            3. Maintenance and correction of all production bugs.
            4. Governance
              1. Management and maintenance of development environment including source control. Maintain code in a version control system supporting multiple branches / deployment paths
              2. Management and maintenance of operational monitoring environment.
              3. Follow company and departmental policies and procedures
              4. Follow all coding and documentation standards

 

Description of tasks
  1. Application Development
    1. Daily maintenance to designated applications in the Production, QA and Development environments.
    2. Coding and testing as required to completed assigned tasks.
    3. Service Management
      1. Perform health system checks on areas of responsibility
      2. Escalate issues within timescales allowed to third party vendors or other IT functions
      3. IT Procedures
        1. Implement application standards including code, development, testing, change and release standards
        2. Feedback and activity updates to:
          1. Application Manager – daily operational reporting to the head of Applications.Prepare reports and correspondence concerning project specifications, activities and status.
          2. Application Developers – this role is required to do shift handover to other developers.
          3. Project Managers – status and progress updates as required.
Skills and qualifications required
  1. Business / Industry Experience
    1. Experienced in one or more of the following areas; banking, stockbroking, transactional finance, data warehousing
    2. Business analytical experience in Debtor Finance, Trade Finance, Rental Finance, Capital Equipment AND/OR Domestic Treasury would be advantageous.
    3. Education
      1. Matric plus appropriate tertiary qualification  – B.Sc (Computer Science) or B.Sc (Information Systems) preferred OR Matric with 4 years relevant experience in IT
      2. AND a relevant industry certification such as .

i.      MCITP – Developer (MCPD): Enterprise Application

Developer

ii.      MCITP-  Business Management Solutions Specialist

iii.      MCITP – Database Administrator 2008

iv.      MCITP – Business Intelligence Developer

  1. Experience
    1. 4 years experience in developing and supporting C#.Net desktop and web application development in an enterprise environment.
    2. 2 years experience in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or 2008
    3. Experience in a high-availability, online transacting environment.
    4. Experience in a group data warehouse environment
    5. Technology
      1. Understanding of Microsoft .NET technologies with emphasis on C# development in the web and desktop environments.
      2. Thorough understanding of Microsoft development tools and environment including MS-SSIS, MS-SSAS and MS-SSRS.
      3. Thorough understanding of Microsoft Windows Server System
      4. Exposure to and understanding of Microsoft Biztalk Server support will be a strong recommendation.
